Big Sur was a genuine inflection point for the Mac platform: it shipped as the very first MacOS version to support Apple's own M1 chip, running side by side with continued Intel Mac support, and introduced the current squared-off icon style and Control Center. It's still a realistic choice for 2013-2015-era Intel Macs that can't take a newer MacOS version at all, and Apple's Mac App Store listing for it remains a real, working official download for exactly that use case -- genuinely still in service, not merely archived.
