LXD

LXD is an open-source system container and virtual machine manager for Linux. It is intended for developers and operators who need to create and manage Linux-based instances on their own systems. The project supports both local and remote instance management through a command-line interface and a REST API.

LXD uses an image-based workflow, allowing instances to be created from available images rather than requiring each environment to be built from scratch. Images are available for all Ubuntu releases and architectures, along with a wide range of other Linux distributions. Its integrations with many deployment and operation tools let it fit into workflows that resemble public-cloud management while keeping control with the user.

Containers are lightweight and secure by default, making them an alternative to virtual machines when running Linux on Linux. LXD also manages virtual machines that use UEFI and secure boot by default, which is useful when a different kernel or operating system is needed. Clustering allows up to 50 LXD servers to be joined and managed with the same tools and APIs without external dependencies.

As a Linux developer-tools package, LXD belongs in environments where repeatable instance management and automation are part of development or operations work. Its open-source license allows the software to be used as part of an openly developed toolchain, while its CLI and API provide two ways to work with it.
