LibreELEC forked from the earlier OpenELEC project and strips a Linux system down to essentially nothing but what's needed to boot and run Kodi, the open-source media center application, treating the whole device as a single-purpose appliance rather than a general computer. It supports a wide range of hardware, from Raspberry Pi and other single-board computers up to x86 mini PCs, with hardware-accelerated video decoding tuned per platform so even modest hardware plays high-resolution video smoothly. Its read-only, image-based update model (reflash the whole system image rather than update individual packages) mirrors the same reliability-through-simplicity philosophy many embedded and IoT-focused distributions share.
