LMDE exists as an insurance policy: the Linux Mint project builds it to prove the Cinnamon desktop experience isn't dependent on Ubuntu's continued existence or direction, tracking Debian's Stable branch instead. Day to day it looks and behaves almost identically to regular Linux Mint -- same Cinnamon desktop, same Mint tools (Update Manager, Software Manager, Timeshift backups) -- but the underlying package base moves at Debian's slower, more conservative pace. It's a good pick for users who want Mint's polish but are wary of Ubuntu's Snap packaging direction or corporate ownership by Canonical.
