OpenMediaVault was created by Volker Theile, a former developer on the FreeNAS project (TrueNAS CORE's predecessor), applying similar 'point-and-click NAS management' thinking to a Debian base instead of FreeBSD. It manages file sharing (SMB/NFS/FTP), RAID, and storage through a browser-based interface, with a plugin system that extends its functionality for things like Docker container management, additional protocols, or monitoring, without needing to touch Debian's underlying configuration files directly. It's generally viewed as a lighter-weight, less resource-hungry option than TrueNAS SCALE, appealing to users running a NAS on more modest hardware (including low-power single-board computers) who don't specifically need ZFS's advanced features.
