postmarketOS was founded with an explicit sustainability goal captured in its own tagline -- 'Sustainable mobile devices, powered by Linux' -- pushing to get old Android phones (which typically stop receiving any updates within a few years) running a genuinely maintained, current Linux system instead of being discarded once their vendor support ends. It builds on Alpine Linux's small footprint and package system, and specifically pushes toward using the mainline upstream Linux kernel on phone hardware rather than a vendor's old, frozen, heavily patched kernel fork, which is what usually makes long-term phone software support so difficult in the Android ecosystem. It also runs on dedicated Linux-phone hardware (like the PinePhone and Librem 5), and its choice of mobile desktop (Phosh, Plasma Mobile, and others) is configurable depending on the image and target device.
