Trisquel takes Ubuntu's package base and systematically removes anything that isn't free software by the Free Software Foundation's own strict definition -- proprietary firmware ('blobs'), non-free codecs, and any other component that doesn't meet the FSF's free-software guidelines -- which is exactly why the FSF lists it among the handful of distributions it formally endorses. That thoroughness can mean some hardware (particularly Wi-Fi adapters and GPUs needing proprietary firmware to function at all) won't work out of the box the way it would on regular Ubuntu, a direct tradeoff for its uncompromising free-software stance. It's a common choice specifically for users and organizations for whom software-freedom principles are a hard requirement, not just a preference.
