  1. 1Create the files directory

    mkdir $PWD/files
    chown 1000 $PWD/files

    The Vikunja container runs as uid 1000, so the host directory it writes uploaded files to must be owned by that uid.

  2. 2Write a docker-compose.yml

    Define a vikunja service (image vikunja/vikunja) alongside a postgres:18 database, setting VIKUNJA_SERVICE_PUBLICURL, VIKUNJA_DATABASE_* variables, and a random VIKUNJA_SERVICE_SECRET.

    Vikunja's docs also show simpler docker run examples and package/binary installs if you don't want Postgres.

  3. 3Start the stack

    docker compose up -d

  4. 4Access Vikunja and register

    Open http://<your-server-ip>:3456 and register the first user through the web UI — Vikunja ships with no default account.
