VeraCrypt

VeraCrypt is open-source security-and-privacy software for Windows. It creates and maintains encrypted storage volumes that can be used to hold files and other data. Encryption occurs as data is written to the volume, and decryption occurs as data is read from it.

A mounted VeraCrypt volume can be used in much the same way as a normal disk for copying files, including through ordinary file operations such as drag and drop. The volume encrypts the file system, including file names, folder names, file contents, free space, and metadata. Data on the volume cannot be read without the correct password, keyfile, or encryption key. VeraCrypt performs these operations automatically while data is being read from or written to the volume.

The software is intended for Windows users who need encrypted storage for files and related file-system information. It can be used when data should remain protected while stored in an encrypted volume rather than being kept as ordinary readable files.
