elementary OS treats interface design as a first-class product concern rather than an afterthought: every included app is built specifically for its Pantheon desktop, following a strict human interface guideline, producing a level of visual consistency few other distributions attempt. The AppCenter is a pay-what-you-want app store of Flatpak-sandboxed, privacy-respecting third-party apps, with revenue split directly with developers -- a rare sustainable-funding model in the Linux desktop space. It deliberately limits configurability compared to GNOME or KDE distributions, trading flexibility for a coherent, opinionated experience closer to MacOS than Windows. It's built on an Ubuntu LTS base, released less frequently than Ubuntu itself, prioritizing polish over being first with new package versions.
