  1. 1Install Windows Terminal

    winget install --id Microsoft.WindowsTerminal -e

    Windows 11 ships with it by default -- this step mainly applies to Windows 10.

  2. 2Install PowerShell 7

    This installs alongside the built-in Windows PowerShell 5.1 rather than replacing it -- both remain available.

    winget install --id Microsoft.PowerShell -e

  3. 3Set PowerShell 7 as Windows Terminal's default profile

    In Windows Terminal, open Settings (Ctrl+,), set "Default profile" to "PowerShell" (the pwsh.exe one, distinct from "Windows PowerShell"), and save.
