motd

motd is an open-source native IRC client for Android in the Communication category. It is designed for people who use direct IRC networks or connect through soju bouncers. Users can establish direct server connections or use a bouncer for persistent connections, access to multiple networks, synchronized history, read markers, and push delivery. The application does not require a hosted account or a proprietary chat service.

The client supports IRCv3 capabilities, SASL PLAIN and EXTERNAL authentication, TLS, and client certificates. For soju connections, it supports bouncer networks and Web Push through UnifiedPush. Local chat tools include infinite scrollback, search, full-text filtering, replies, reactions, typing indicators, nick autocomplete, and slash commands. It also provides inline images, link previews, file uploads, configurable chat wallpapers, and routing through SOCKS5, Tor, or optional VLESS + REALITY using embedded sing-box. Its interface includes Material You themes, dark and AMOLED modes, custom text sizes, and configurable message styles.

As an Android application, motd is intended for use on devices running Android 8.0 or newer. The embedded VLESS + REALITY transport is available on arm64-v8a devices. The FOSS build uses UnifiedPush for battery-friendly background delivery and has no Google Firebase dependency. MirrorNest distributes the official build directly from its own storage after scanning it for malware before publication. This arrangement gives Android users a mirrored download of the open-source Communication application while keeping the build tied to its official distribution source.
