AlmaLinux launched the same year as Rocky Linux and for the same reason -- CentOS's shift to CentOS Stream left a gap for a stable, downstream RHEL rebuild -- with initial funding and engineering from CloudLinux, the company behind the CloudLinux OS hosting-focused distribution. It's now governed by the independent AlmaLinux OS Foundation, and it commits to remaining ABI-compatible with RHEL for the life of each release, so software certified for RHEL runs on AlmaLinux unmodified. Alongside Rocky Linux, it's a standard choice for organizations moving off classic CentOS or avoiding CentOS Stream's rolling model in production.
