Nexus Repository OSS

Nexus Repository OSS (Community Edition) from Sonatype is a universal artifact repository manager for hosting and proxying Maven, npm, Docker, PyPI, and other package formats behind a single server.

  1. 1Create a persistent data volume

    docker volume create --name nexus-data

  2. 2Run the container

    docker run -d -p 8081:8081 --name nexus -v nexus-data:/nexus-data sonatype/nexus3

    Nexus runs as UID 200 inside the container, which matters if you bind-mount a host directory instead of a named volume.

  3. 3Wait for startup

    Allow 2-3 minutes on first start; wait for the log to report the server has started.

    docker logs -f nexus

  4. 4Retrieve the initial admin password

    docker exec nexus cat /nexus-data/admin.password

  5. 5First login

    Browse to http://localhost:8081, sign in as admin with the password above, and complete the setup wizard (set a new password, choose anonymous access policy).
