nmap

Scan a network with nmap to locate active hosts, inspect their open ports, and see which services are reachable through them. It identifies service protocols and application versions, and can fingerprint a remote host’s operating system or device type.

Targets and ports can be specified flexibly, allowing focused checks or broader network exploration during security audits. Its scanning capabilities include multiple port-scanning methods, sunRPC scanning, and decoy or stealth techniques.

Administrators and security professionals use nmap to inventory networked systems, investigate exposed services, and assess a network’s visible attack surface.
