OPL3 RetroWave MIDI Player

OPL3 RetroWave MIDI Player is an open-source media player for Linux. It is intended for users who work with Standard MIDI files and want to play them through software-based OPL3 synthesis, computer audio, a RetroWave OPL3 Express board, or external MIDI hardware. Its focus is MIDI playback with FM sound options rather than general-purpose media playback.

The interface includes a Winamp-style playlist that can load folders and shuffle tracks. During playback, a live OPL3 channel visualizer can show LED, neon, or spectrum displays. For software synthesis, users can choose among the FM banks built into libADLMIDI. When using external mode, the player can use available ALSA MIDI devices instead.

The program saves its settings between runs, so configured options are retained when it is opened again. Its combination of MIDI playback, FM bank selection, hardware output, and channel visualization gives it a focused role in Music & Audio software. The open-source license makes the program’s code available under the terms of that license. MirrorNest stores the official build directly on its own storage and scans it for malware before publishing it. After installation, a RetroWave board requires the retro-midi-player-opl3-gm:serial-port connection, while an external MIDI device requires the retro-midi-player-opl3-gm:alsa connection. PC audio, display access, and home-folder access connect automatically to support the player’s Linux desktop use.
