  1. 1This replaces the OS, like pfSense

    TrueNAS SCALE is installed from an ISO onto dedicated storage, or into a VM with disks passed through for it to manage directly — not layered on top of an existing Linux install.

  3. 3Install and configure

    Boot from the ISO, install to a dedicated boot drive (not one you intend to use for storage pools), then finish setup from the web UI once it reboots.

    Give TrueNAS its own small boot drive separate from the disks you want in a storage pool — the installer will offer to use whatever drive you point it at as the boot device.
