Source Mage compiles all of its software from source using Sorcery, its own purpose-built package manager, occupying similar territory to Gentoo -- full control over compile-time options, no reliance on someone else's pre-built binaries -- but built by an entirely independent, much smaller community with its own tooling and conventions rather than sharing any lineage with Gentoo's Portage system. It's aimed squarely at experienced Linux users comfortable with a source-based workflow and the longer install/update times that come with it, in exchange for the same fine-grained build customization Gentoo offers through a different toolset.
