Waydroid

Run a full Android system in a lightweight container on Linux -- the actively maintained, Wayland-based successor to the now-deprecated Anbox project.

  1. 1Install Waydroid

    Waydroid is packaged for most major distributions (Ubuntu/Debian via its official repo, Arch via the AUR, Fedora via a COPR repo) -- Ubuntu shown here.

    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install -y waydroid

    Replace UBUNTU_CODENAME with your release's codename (run `lsb_release -sc` to check it), e.g. 'noble' or 'jammy'.

  2. 2Initialize the Android image

    Downloads and sets up the actual Android system image (based on LineageOS) Waydroid will run inside its container.

    sudo waydroid init

  3. 3Start the Waydroid session

    sudo systemctl start waydroid-container
    waydroid show-full-ui

    Waydroid requires a Wayland session (not X11) to work -- it will fail to start a GUI session under a pure Xorg desktop.

  4. 4Install Android apps

    Waydroid ships without the Play Store by default. Sideload APKs directly, or install F-Droid/a Play Store alternative inside the Waydroid session the same way you would on a real Android device.
