OpenCoWork

OpenCoWork is an open-source software tool for developers who work with code, terminal output, and project files. It provides an agent-based way to work with a local development environment instead of keeping the agent limited to a separate chat context. The tool is intended for tasks where an agent needs to inspect project material and make changes with the developer’s permission.

With Local Agency, agents can read and write files and execute shell commands when the user allows those actions. Its context-awareness functions let agents explore a codebase and review logs without requiring the developer to manually copy each item into a conversation. This can support work such as examining existing code, using terminal information, and applying changes to files. OpenCoWork also supports task orchestration, allowing complex requests such as refactoring a module and updating its tests to be divided among specialized sub-agents.

The user remains involved through a transparent tool-call approval system. This approval process makes file access, file changes, and shell command execution subject to the developer’s permission.
