SLES is one of the two original 'big enterprise Linux' products (alongside RHEL), commercially supported by SUSE, a European company, and particularly dominant as the certified platform for running SAP HANA and other SAP workloads. It shares its underlying package base with openSUSE Leap, meaning changes and packages proven in the community distribution feed directly into what ships in the paid enterprise product. It's managed through YaST like every SUSE product, and SUSE sells long-term support contracts (typically 13+ years per major version with extended support) aimed at large regulated organizations that need multi-decade platform stability.
