Binaural Beat

Binaural Beat is an open-source Android application in the Ambient Sound category that generates binaural beats for relaxation, focus, and sleep. It is intended for people who want to explore this audio technique for personal use. The app is not a medical treatment and is meant for relaxation and personal experimentation only.

The effect is created by playing two slightly different frequencies, one in each ear, so the brain perceives a third beat at the difference between them. Headphones are required for this effect to work. The Simple audio engine provides a lightweight built-in tone generator with sliders for the base frequency and beat frequency.

The SBaGen engine is based on the classic Sequenced Binaural Beat Generator by Jim Peters and includes 58 bundled preset sequences covering brainwave states, focus levels, chakra progressions, and other categories. An independent background layer can be mixed under the beats with its own volume control. This layer provides pink and brown noise generated on the fly, along with looping nature samples of a river and a train, while the interface remains clean and modern.

Binaural Beat is a 2026 revival of an older project that was a native Android port of SBaGen through OpenSL ES, while this version retains the genuine SBaGen engine on a modern stack. The application is free software released under the GNU GPL v2, and it builds on Jim Peters's GPLv2 SBaGen. The bundled audio samples are freely licensed under Creative Commons, with full attribution listed in the project's CREDITS.
