immich desktop is an open-source Linux client for connecting to an Immich server and working with its stored media. It is intended for people who want to access a server-based photo and video library from a desktop application rather than relying only on a browser. The client uses an API key to establish the connection to the server.

Once connected, users can browse their library and explore media grouped by people, places, and recently added items. It supports uploading and downloading files, and it can stream videos from the connected server. Its built-in media player handles video playback within the application, so an external browser is not required for that task.

Offline mode and local caching let the client continue working when an internet connection is unavailable, while smart caching reduces repeated loading of thumbnails and previously accessed content. The application can detect an available local or home endpoint and use it when possible, then switch back to the standard endpoint when that local endpoint cannot be reached. Background media loading is designed to use memory efficiently, and failed uploads are placed in a queue that retries them after connectivity returns. Single-instance mode prevents multiple copies from running simultaneously, and automatic updates include intelligent installation of updates.
