BunsenLabs was created by community members after Philip Newborough discontinued his popular CrunchBang Linux in 2015, picking up its distinctive minimalist Openbox setup -- a right-click application menu, a lean panel (tint2), and heavy reliance on keyboard shortcuts -- and continuing it as a genuinely community-run project rather than a single maintainer's side project. It stays close to plain Debian Stable underneath, adding curated configuration and a handful of BunsenLabs-specific scripts and themes rather than reworking the base system extensively. It remains a go-to pick for users who specifically miss CrunchBang's particular blend of minimalism and pre-configured usability.
