Slackware

Slackware has followed one consistent philosophy since 1993: keep the system as close to a traditional, simple Unix design as possible, and avoid taking on complexity that isn't strictly necessary -- which famously includes not building automatic dependency resolution into its native package tools, on the reasoning that a sysadmin should know and manage their own system's dependencies deliberately rather than have a tool guess for them. That makes it a genuinely different experience from almost every other distribution in this directory, closer to how Linux administration worked decades ago, and it remains a favorite among longtime Unix/Linux administrators who value that directness and predictability over convenience. Its long, unbroken development history (with no corporate ownership at any point) also makes it one of the most historically significant distributions on this entire list.
