Ubuntu

Ubuntu is the default recommendation for most people trying Linux for the first time, and for good reason: it has the largest hardware compatibility list, the biggest community, and nearly every piece of Linux software is tested against it first. Canonical ships a new release every six months and a Long Term Support (LTS) release every two years, with five years of security updates -- most desktop users should stick to LTS. It uses GNOME as its default desktop, customized with a dock and Yaru theming, and its own Snap package format alongside traditional .deb packages. Countless other distributions (Linux Mint, Pop!_OS, Zorin OS, elementary OS) are themselves built on top of Ubuntu's package base.
