  1. 1Choose your install method

    Home Assistant OS (a full, dedicated appliance image) is the officially recommended method and is what the VM images below provide — it gets automatic updates and add-on support that a plain Docker container doesn't. Use Docker instead only if this server already runs other things you don't want a dedicated appliance OS to take over.

  2. 2Official pre-built VM images

    Home Assistant OS ships ready-made images for VirtualBox (OVA) and most major hypervisors, plus Raspberry Pi and generic x86-64 images.

  3. 3Alternative: Docker container

    docker run -d --name homeassistant --privileged --restart=unless-stopped -e TZ=Etc/UTC -v /PATH_TO_YOUR_CONFIG:/config --network=host ghcr.io/home-assistant/home-assistant:stable

    Replace /PATH_TO_YOUR_CONFIG with a real directory on the host — this is where all your automations and settings persist.

    Open http://your-server-ip:8123 and follow the onboarding wizard.
