  1. 1Clone the official docker-compose repository

    Check out the stable branch matching the OpenProject release you want (e.g. stable/17).

    git clone https://github.com/opf/openproject-docker-compose.git --depth=1 --branch stable/17 openproject
    cd openproject

  2. 2Configure the environment

    cp .env.example .env
    vim .env

  3. 3Prepare the assets directory

    sudo mkdir -p /var/openproject/assets
    sudo chown 1000:1000 -R /var/openproject/assets

  4. 4Start OpenProject

    SECRET_KEY_BASE=$(openssl rand -hex 64) OPENPROJECT_HTTPS=false docker compose up -d --build --pull always

    OPENPROJECT_HTTPS=false is only for the first plain-HTTP startup. For real production use, remove it and put OpenProject behind a TLS-terminating reverse proxy, and always set your own SECRET_KEY_BASE.

  5. 5Log in

    Open http://localhost:8080 and sign in with the default credentials admin / admin, then change the password immediately.
