Windows Terminal + PowerShell 7
Replace the legacy Windows console with the modern, tabbed Windows Terminal and upgrade from Windows PowerShell 5.1 to the actively-developed, cross-platform PowerShell 7.
This guide is synthesized from Windows Terminal + PowerShell 7's own official documentation, linked above — always cross-check exact package/version names there before running these commands on a production server, since distro and project versions move over time.
1Install Windows Terminal
winget install --id Microsoft.WindowsTerminal -eWindows 11 ships with it by default -- this step mainly applies to Windows 10.
2Install PowerShell 7
This installs alongside the built-in Windows PowerShell 5.1 rather than replacing it -- both remain available.
winget install --id Microsoft.PowerShell -e3Set PowerShell 7 as Windows Terminal's default profile
In Windows Terminal, open Settings (Ctrl+,), set "Default profile" to "PowerShell" (the pwsh.exe one, distinct from "Windows PowerShell"), and save.
