Yosemite was a major visual break from every prior OS X version, replacing over a decade of skeuomorphic textures (leather, felt, wood-grain UI elements) with a flat, translucent design language clearly influenced by iOS 7, and introduced Handoff for continuing work between a Mac and an iPhone/iPad. It remains one of the versions Apple's own official support article still provides a real download path for, for the small remaining population of 2007-2009 Macs too old for anything newer.
