Windows 8.1 was Microsoft's course-correction release after Windows 8's controversial tablet-first interface, restoring a Start button and letting the system boot directly to the desktop. It reached its final end of support on January 10, 2023, and notably, Microsoft never made any Extended Security Updates program available for it the way it did for Windows 7 and later Windows 10 -- once support ended, there was no paid path to keep receiving patches at all. It's still occasionally found on older tablets and budget laptops from its era that were never upgraded.
