Server 2012 R2 refined the original Server 2012 release with improvements to Hyper-V, Storage Spaces, and Active Directory, and became the more widely deployed of the two as a result. Microsoft treats it and Server 2012 as running on the identical support timeline -- both reached end of support on the same October 10, 2023 date, and both have their Extended Security Updates option closing for good on October 13, 2026.
