About
How2Vote asks you to answer 50 propositions that Australia’s Parliament has actually voted on. It compares your responses with each party’s recorded parliamentary votes and shows the closest matches among the candidates on your ballot, in official ballot-paper order. You can then create your own preference order, without having parties ranked for you or receiving a recommended vote.
Designed for Australian federal elections, How2Vote is an independent, non-partisan app rather than a government service. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or authorised by the Australian Electoral Commission, the Parliament of Australia, or another government entity. The complete questions, scoring system, and result card are stored on the device, so the app works offline at a polling place or anywhere without a signal. An internet connection is used only when you send the contact form, opt in to anonymous research, or follow a link to the AEC or They Vote For You.
The comparisons use recorded parliamentary divisions from public Hansard data, not campaign statements, and each proposition links to the divisions behind it. Candidate details, ballot order, electoral divisions, and election dates come from the AEC’s 2025 federal election downloads; map boundaries use AEC GIS data; parliamentary records come from aph.gov.au; and compiled voting records come from They Vote For You by the OpenAustralia Foundation.
Answers and weighting remain on the device without an account or sign-up. A two-tone interface avoids using party colours to signal match quality, while the public scoring method is deterministic and reproducible. Version 1.3.28 includes the latest compiled parliamentary voting-record dataset and app improvements, and runs on Android 7.0 or later with universal architecture under the open-source AGPL-3.0-or-later license. How2Vote is authorised by General Consulting Services Pty Ltd as trustee for the Australian Business Trust, trading as National Digital, Gold Coast, Queensland.
