Kanji draw

Kanji draw is an open-source Android application in the Education category for identifying kanji written by hand. It is intended for people studying Japanese or working with kanji who need to enter a character they cannot easily type. Users draw one or more characters on the device touchscreen, and the application analyzes the handwriting to produce a list of possible matches.

The user can select the intended character from the recognition results and continue entering additional characters. Once the desired text has been entered, it can be copied to the Android clipboard. The copied result can then be transferred to a dictionary or another application for further reference or use.

Recognition works best when characters are drawn approximately according to their customary or official forms. A shape that only resembles a kanji but uses an arbitrary drawing method may not be identified correctly. This makes a basic understanding of kanji structure and stroke order relevant to using the application effectively.

Kanji draw is distributed on MirrorNest as an Android Science & Education application under an open-source license. It is a fork of an earlier Kanji draw project that is no longer maintained, and its included kanji stroke data is based on the KanjiVG dataset. Two included icons originate from the Android SDK and retain their respective stated licenses. MirrorNest stores the official build directly on its own servers and scans it for malware before publishing the download.
