Send one-to-one messages with end-to-end encryption over Tor, so only the sender and recipient can read their contents. Night Drop uses the Signal Double Ratchet and routes connections peer to peer through Tor, with no clearnet path. Contacts can be authorized by scanning a pre-authorized QR code or exchanging a short code, with safety numbers available for additional verification.

Messages stay on the device by default. An optional relay can hold opaque, already-encrypted data for offline delivery, while optional server storage lasts up to 24 hours and shows a persistent warning in the chat. Encrypted backups use a recovery password generated and shown once on the device; losing it makes the backup unrecoverable. The app includes no analytics, crash reporters, advertising SDKs, Google Play Services, or third-party push service.

In version 0.1.27, a WebTunnel bridge can carry Tor inside ordinary HTTPS when a network blocks Tor, and Bridges can be configured before creating an identity. Repeatedly tapping reconnect no longer offers to create a new identity over an existing one. Night Drop runs on Android 7.0 or later for arm64-v8a devices.
