About

Smart Radio Telescope controls a self-built Azimuth, Elevation, and polarization radio-telescope mount over local WiFi, allowing you to aim the dish and monitor its operation from an Android phone. It accepts horizontal Az/El coordinates or equatorial RA/Dec coordinates for precise pointing. Manual controls drive all three axes, run the homing routine, and display live position, movement, and status telemetry from the mount.

The built-in sky-view canvas shows stars and constellations, while radio-sky overlays include Haslam 408 MHz and HI4PI data. An object catalogue provides rise and set times, and raster scans produce a live heatmap that can be shared as an image. Version 1.1 also tracks eight bright radio sources, adds a virtual joystick, displays a live signal chart and Raspberry Pi health, uses the phone’s position to set the observing site, and brings landscape layouts with many fixes.

Designed as a school demonstrator for radio astronomy, the app suits classroom experiments, student projects, and hands-on observations with a home-built instrument. It requires the matching open-source telescope hardware and Raspberry Pi backend from the same project, with the Pi running its FastAPI service. Communication takes place with a device you operate on your own network; the app contacts no external servers and collects no data.

Smart Radio Telescope is open-source education software for Android 8.0 or newer, supporting arm64-v8a, armeabi-v7a, x86_64, and x86 devices. The application depends on that motorized telescope assembly and its Raspberry Pi controller rather than functioning independently.

What's new in v1.1

Radio sky overlays (Haslam 408 MHz, HI4PI) and an object catalogue with rise and set times. Raster scans with a live heatmap, shareable as an image. Tracking of eight bright radio sources, a virtual joystick, a live signal chart and Raspberry Pi health. The phone's position can set the site. Landscape layouts and many fixes.
