AlterSend sends files directly from one device to another with end-to-end encryption, avoiding cloud storage and the server copies that come with it. A transfer can target another device or a recipient who receives a link, so the other party can use a browser without installing the app. Pair devices once with a QR code or short code, after which AlterSend recognizes them for future transfers.

Direct connections work across local Wi-Fi or the internet, including transfers between people in different locations. If a direct route is unavailable, an encrypted relay forwards the data without being able to read it; relay transfers are limited to 20 GB between apps and 10 GB through browser links, while direct transfers have no size limit. Users can run their own relay to remove that cap, or use the Pro option, and interrupted transfers resume after a lost connection, closed laptop, or depleted battery.

AlterSend is aimed at sending large files privately between personal devices, to contacts, or across PCs and smartphones without uploading them to storage, and it is ad-free. Its open-source apps cover Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android, while link recipients can transfer through a browser; paired devices retain only a public key and can be removed from the pairing list.

The Mac release is freeware, current at version 2.0.0, and requires macOS 12 Monterey or newer on Apple Silicon hardware using the arm64 architecture. No account is needed, and the service has no cloud storage or general file-size limit, though relay routing remains subject to its stated caps unless bypassed through Pro or a self-hosted relay.
