ArcBox runs containers, Linux virtual machines, and AI agent sandboxes on a Mac, giving developers a single runtime for several kinds of isolated workloads. It solves the practical problem of running Linux-oriented development environments and agent processes alongside macOS projects. Developers can use its container runtime for packaged application environments, launch Linux virtual machines when a complete operating-system context is appropriate, and place AI agents in sandboxes to separate their activity from the surrounding workspace.

Containers are suited to testing and running application components, while virtual machines provide a fuller Linux environment for software that depends on system-level behavior. The sandbox mode gives AI agents a contained place to perform their tasks, making ArcBox useful for agent experimentation as well as conventional development. Its combination of these three capabilities distinguishes it from software focused on only containers or only virtual machines.

ArcBox is Developer Tools software, distributed as freeware for MacOS. Current version 1.38.0 requires macOS 15 Sequoia or newer and supports Apple Silicon through the arm64 architecture. That requirement makes the intended audience developers working on compatible Macs who need local containers, Linux environments, or controlled spaces for AI-agent workflows. Older macOS releases and Intel-based Macs are not supported.
