About
Record, cut, and arrange audio into finished tracks with Audacity, using waveform editing to remove mistakes, tighten timing, and shape recordings. As open-source software in the Video & Media Players category, it provides a workspace for recording, editing, mixing, and exporting sound. The Windows x64 build, published by audacity as Audacity-4.0.0, runs on Windows 8 and later and Windows Server 2012 and later.
It captures microphone or line-in performances, supports multitrack projects, and includes tools for fades, silence removal, normalization, noise reduction, equalization, and other effects. Users can inspect audio as waveforms or spectrograms, add labels, and combine spoken-word, music, and sound effects for podcasts, lessons, demos, and archival work. Musicians, podcasters, educators, and anyone cleaning up home recordings can use it for precise edits without requiring a full music-production suite.
Audacity 4 rebuilds the interface on Qt and introduces a new clip-editing model alongside other quality-of-life changes. Clips can be selected from their headers, with Shift-click selecting several, so moving, trimming, and time-stretching can affect them together. Groups keep clips together during moves, copying, pasting, and duplication, while clips can move between mono and stereo tracks; placing one over another replaces the overlapped section rather than blocking the move.
A dedicated split tool responds to S and a click on the waveform or clip header, while commands also provide split, split-cut, split-delete, split-at-silences, and split-to-new-track operations. Pasting now handles more cases automatically, and most Audacity 3 workflows remain available even though some controls have moved or changed in the 4.0 release.
