BetterZip creates, opens, extracts, and modifies archives, letting you manage compressed files without rebuilding them after every change. It creates ZIP, DMG, TAR, TGZ, TBZ, TXZ, TZ, Zstandard, Brotli, 7-Zip, XAR, and ISO archives, while RAR creation works through an external command-line utility. Existing archives can be edited in place by adding, deleting, renaming, or editing files, including files opened in an external application; Mac-specific entries can also be stripped for cleaner Windows compatibility.

It opens and extracts more than 30 formats, joins split files such as .001 and .002, decodes winmail.dat attachments, and opens or modifies ePub files. Custom archive types can be added through user-editable JSON definitions, while filters can exclude items such as Thumbs.db, .DS_Store, .git, and build artifacts. BetterZip 6 adds icon and column views alongside list and outline layouts, plus a full-screen viewer for image archives and comic books that works without extraction.

AES-256 encryption, an encrypted password vault, automatic password entry, a built-in strong-password generator, and SHA-256 and other hash tools cover protected file sharing. Quick Look, Finder’s contextual menu and toolbar, the Share extension, Spotlight filename indexing, and Shortcuts connect archive tasks with everyday workflows. Collect Mode assembles an archive from items copied from different locations, while presets save destinations, formats, encryption, filters, renaming rules, conflict policies, and post-processing actions using shell scripts, AppleScript, Automator, or Shortcuts.

Version 6.0.6 requires macOS 13 Ventura or later and supports Intel and Apple Silicon. BetterZip is freeware with a 30-day full-featured trial and no subscription.
