Run shells, editors, agents, and monitoring commands in a browser-like terminal workspace that keeps related sessions organized. Canario is a Rio spin-off listed in Developer Tools, distributed as freeware for macOS; version 2026.09.18.35 is a beta release requiring macOS 14 Sonoma or later on Apple Silicon (arm64).

Built on Rio’s librio terminal engine, it retains Rio’s VT handling, rendering core, and color behavior while adding spaces, resizable row and column splits, tabs, and a summonable quick terminal. Live previews appear when you hover over a tab or pane, while each split preserves its own working directory and restores its scrollback after a restart. A searchable command bar finds terminals by title or panes by name, and can execute actions such as creating tabs, splitting panes, opening the quick terminal, or changing the font size.

Canario displays terminal images through the kitty graphics protocol, then lets you open them in a lightbox and use Live Text to select text or scan QR codes from charts and screenshots. Images can be dragged out as real PNG files, copied, saved, or shared through a context menu. Commands that emit OSC 9;4 progress updates show a spinner in the tab, a percentage on the Dock icon, and a menu-bar indicator that returns you to the terminal.

Developers can run an editor, htop, and an AI agent side by side, customize every shortcut through conflict-aware keybinding controls, and move between panes with ⌥⌘ plus an arrow or ⌘[ and ⌘]. Claude Code, Codex, and other agents can signal completion or a request for input through tab badges, the menu bar, and the Dock, making Canario useful when long builds or agent tasks continue while you work elsewhere.
