ChronyControl1.7.0

ChronyControl installs and configures chronyd, giving users a practical way to establish chrony-based timekeeping on a Mac instead of managing the service entirely by hand. It is useful for setting up an NTP or GPS-assisted time source when ordinary system clock configuration is not sufficient.

As a System Tools entry, ChronyControl 1.7.0 is freeware for macOS. It is intended for people investigating precise timekeeping on Mac computers, including setups that use GPS as a time reference. The developer recommends Jeff Geerling’s overview of using GPS for highly accurate time on a Mac as background for evaluating an NTP/GPS implementation.

The current release requires macOS Sonoma 14.6 or later and runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon hardware. It updates the bundled chrony service to chrony 4.9, recodes the chronyhelper component in Swift with NSXPCConnection classes, and verifies helper clients through code-signing requirements instead of PID checks.

Because these changes can affect operation, users should read ChronyControl’s dialogs carefully and follow their instructions during setup or updates. If difficulties continue, the release can be safely reverted to the previous version while troubleshooting.
