cmux lets developers run multiple AI coding-agent sessions in one native terminal, arranging them as vertical tabs and split panes while signaling when a process needs attention. Its sidebar displays each workspace’s Git branch, working directory, exposed ports, and notification text, while notification rings illuminate panes whose agents require input. Horizontal and vertical splits can be created within every tab, making concurrent tasks visible rather than buried in separate windows.

The terminal works with Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Kiro, Aider, Goose, Amp, Cline, Cursor Agent, and any other command-line tool. When agents create subagents or teammates, cmux represents them as controllable native panes, including Claude Code teams and oh-my-opencode multi-model runs. An embedded browser can sit beside terminal workspaces through a scriptable API, and extensive keyboard shortcuts cover workspaces, splits, browsing, and other actions. CLI and socket APIs also let scripts automate cmux, while libghostty provides GPU-accelerated rendering in a Swift and AppKit application rather than an Electron shell.

Remote workflows can open SSH workspaces and attach to remote tmux sessions, so an agent can run on another host while remaining visible in cmux. An iOS companion is available in beta through TestFlight: pairing an iPhone or iPad from the Mobile Connect window provides realtime terminal access and optional notification forwarding, with early access included in the Founder’s Edition.

cmux 0.64.25 is a GPL-licensed freeware developer tool for macOS 14 Sonoma or later, supporting both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. It uses libghostty as a rendering library but is a separate application from Ghostty itself.
