CrossOver runs many Windows applications directly on a Mac, allowing you to use Microsoft software, productivity programs, utilities, and games without installing a Windows operating system. Instead of emulating a PC, it translates Windows commands into Mac commands, so applications can operate without the overhead of an emulator or virtual machine. Windows programs can be opened without rebooting, while their windows integrate with the Mac desktop environment.

The same technology also supports Windows software on Linux, where applications can run at native speed, games can maintain full frame rates, and Linux integration remains intact. CrossOver suits Mac users who need a particular Windows application or game alongside their regular software, as well as Linux users who want Windows programs without dual-booting or running a virtual machine. Its approach also contributes code to the open-source community.

CrossOver is freeware, and a free trial is available. On Mac, it supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, requires 1 GB of free disk space plus room for installed Windows applications, and does not run on iPads or iPhones. Beta and unreleased macOS versions are unsupported; Apple Silicon Macs with an M1 chip or newer require macOS 11.1 or later and CrossOver 21 or later.
