Build interactive software by placing objects on a blank canvas and connecting them with patchcords. Each object can generate sound, represent hardware, or provide a user interface, while connections pass outputs between objects. Dials and sliders can control or display values, with data available for modulation, mapping, and scaling. The patcher expands as your work grows, leaving room for experiments that do not fit a fixed structure.

Drag in audio clips to manipulate them and connect effects, or map MIDI controllers while developing a patch. Max supports custom synthesizers with multiple oscillators and effects, sample timestretching and pitch shifting, and multichannel audio through MC objects. Jitter adds expandable video and graphics tools optimized for realtime audiovisual work, which can be combined with audio, sequencing, and modulation. Musicians, sound designers, audiovisual artists, and interaction developers can use it to prototype instruments, performances, interfaces, and unusual sound-making systems.

Connect a development board to access sensors, knobs, and switches as their data streams into the patch. Gen combines procedural commands with visual patching for custom audio, matrix-data, and texture-processing workflows, and can output source code for use elsewhere. The built-in Package Manager provides immediate access to packages within Max. The macOS release is version 9.2.0,261001, supports Intel and Apple Silicon, and is offered as freeware.
