Datasette Desktop lets you open an existing SQLite database on your Mac and browse its tables or run arbitrary SQL queries through the Datasette interface. It also opens CSV files as Datasette tables, using an in-memory database by default that is erased when the application shuts down. CSV data can instead be imported into tables stored in an on-disk SQLite database, including a newly created blank database.

The application runs a local web server that initially accepts connections only from the same computer. Through File → Access Control, you can permit connections from other devices on your network, including Tailscale networks. This allows a database running on a home computer to be explored securely from a mobile phone or another device elsewhere.

It suits developers who need to inspect SQLite data, query files with SQL, or turn CSV data into a browsable local database without working entirely at the command line. Datasette Desktop is a macOS Developer Tools application distributed as freeware, and it supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.

The current release is version 0.2.3, dated February 27, 2023, and fixes errors that could occur while launching the initial application. The preceding 0.2.2 release addressed a launch-crash bug and upgraded the bundled environment to Electron 19 and the latest Datasette.
