Defold lets developers create and publish 2D and 3D games for desktop, web, mobile, and console targets from one codebase. It combines an editor, engine, and production tools in one workflow, solving the need to maintain separate development setups for different platforms. Projects use Lua for game logic, while native extensions allow engine functionality to be expanded with native code.

The editor includes a built-in debugger, profiler, hot reload, fast builds, and Live Update support, while its small engine footprint suits games where application size matters. Developers can modify the editor and workflow with Editor Scripts and custom UI, add functionality through the Asset Portal, or establish a local build environment. Defold also supports both 2D and 3D production and integrates with Atom, VS Code, Rive, Spine, TexturePacker, and Tiled.

Integrations for analytics, in-game economies, game services, platform services, and SDKs help teams connect their games to supporting systems, and the editor is available in English, Russian, Chinese, and Portuguese. Xbox publishing is identified as coming soon.

Defold (Beta) 1.13.2 is freeware for MacOS on Apple Silicon (arm64), with source available under a developer-friendly license and no runtime or other fees. Creating projects involves no setup or registration, and the software includes the tools needed to build games within the editor.
