DOSBox lets you run software written for DOS by emulating an x86 PC and its DOS environment on macOS. It presents a DOS command prompt where you can launch executable programs, batch files, and classic games that expect DOS system behavior. Local folders can be mounted as virtual DOS drives, allowing the emulated programs to work with files stored on the host computer.

The emulator reproduces key PC-era interfaces, including VGA graphics, Sound Blaster-style audio, MIDI, joystick input, and serial communication. Users commonly turn to it for preserving and playing older games, operating legacy DOS utilities, or testing software designed for the x86 DOS platform. Its command-driven environment also supports custom configuration for programs that require particular memory, display, sound, or input settings.

The macOS edition is freeware and supports both Intel and Apple Silicon processors. The current version is 0.74-3,3. This release fixes failures caused by very long lines in batch files overflowing the parsing buffer, addressing CVE-2019-7165, and adds permission controls that stop DOS programs from reading mounted /proc contents such as /proc/self/mem, addressing CVE-2019-12594. It also contains additional out-of-bounds and buffer-overflow corrections, along with fixes to OpenGL rendering.
