Turn source-code comments into navigable reference material with Doxygen, which parses classes, functions, and variables to generate documentation for a project. It produces HTML, PDF through LaTeX, Word documents through RTF, and XML, allowing the results to be read directly or incorporated into other systems.

Markdown support lets developers mix lightweight formatting with Doxygen’s documentation commands, including \param, \return, and \brief. The tool handles C++, C, Python, PHP, Java, C#, Objective-C, Fortran, VHDL, Splice, IDL, and Lex, with especially detailed support for C++ code. Generated pages can cross-reference related elements with hyperlinks, so readers can move between declarations and their connected parts. Doxygen can also render class hierarchies and collaboration diagrams to show relationships visually.

Developers use it to create API references, explain internal code, and keep documentation consistent as a codebase evolves, supporting collaboration and long-term maintenance. A Doxyfile controls the generation process, including output formats, which files are included or excluded, and other documentation settings. The current release is version 1.18.0.

On MacOS, it requires macOS 15 Sequoia or later and runs on Apple Silicon (arm64). Doxygen is freeware and open-source software.
