Flirc lets you pair an infrared remote with a computer or media center, translating its button presses into commands the connected system can understand. Its configuration software guides you through assigning remote buttons to keyboard keys and other controls. After the Flirc USB receiver has been paired, it works on any machine into which the receiver is plugged without additional software. This allows a remote to imitate a computer keyboard and control USB devices connected to that computer.

The setup is useful for home media centers, presentations, conference equipment, and other situations where operating a computer from a distance is more convenient than using a keyboard. It also supports creative arrangements beyond conventional media playback, including custom remote control schemes for compatible USB equipment. Because the receiver learns signals from virtually any infrared remote, users can keep an existing handset while changing what its buttons do.

Flirc 3.27.19 is provided for MacOS and supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. The Mac software is a freeware System Tools utility, while operation depends on the Flirc USB receiver as the infrared interface. Once configured on the Mac, the receiver carries the learned mappings with it, allowing the same remote setup to be used when the hardware is moved to another machine.
